The Shift Method

I am Susan Kates and I have personally had a number of careers. My first career I fell into. While I did like some aspects of it I realized I was not really happy. I did not like the industry, the volatility, the uncertainty. I did make a conscious effort to change, and it was just an accident that I shifted into something I thought I would like. It was simply due to seeing an ad in the newspaper, looking for someone to do Marketing in the Shopping Centre environment and I thought that sounds like something that would be good for me. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to work in that area for 10 years, but I knew I needed to make a change. I then shifted again, to start my own business which I did for another 10 years. I decided I needed to exit that business and now I was stuck looking at “what’s next”. I decided teaching at College would be something that I felt might be something I would like so I set out to do just that. It took me going back to school for 2 years and another 2 years of trying to find an opportunity, but I did it. That’s when I got involved in teaching careers and found a real passion. It was not something I found, it found me but I wish I could have known that before taking all the twists and turns I did.
